How can I find whether my toilet ball valve mechanism is half inch or three quarter inch?

My toilet overflow is leaking, and a friend has offered to replace the ball valve mechanism, to stop the leak. But there is a problem over the size. Apparently the fittings come in two sizes – half an inch and threequarters of an inch. My friend wants to know the size before buying the new mechanism, but I don’t know what size my toilet uses. Is there a way of finding out the right size before dismantling the device?
